SCENE 9: STEPPING INTO THE UNKNOWN - HARP HILL
The digital clocks race forward to
08:30 and the stage revolves to
Pat and Kevin asleep in their
sleeping bags by the Harp Hill
side of the fence. Pat's
traditional alarm clock rings.
PAT
(Sleep talking loudly)
There will be meat at the buffet! And that's an
order!
KEVIN
(Alarmed at being shouted at in his sleep)
No there won't! What?! Arrghh!
PAT
Arrghhh!
KEVIN
Arghhh!
PAT
Calm down! CALM DOWN! EVERYBODY REMAIN CALM!
Pat panicking, fumbles about
trying to find the alarm clock,
finds it but inadvertently throws
it in air and he screams...
PAT
HOT POTATO!
Kevin catches it and turns it off.
KEVIN
How was the night shift?
PAT
All quiet.
KEVIN
You were asleep the whole time weren't you.
PAT
Yes. However, if there was even the slightest
disturbance I would have been roused. I'm a
very light sleeper.
Kevin starts packing up his things
to leave.
PAT
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! What do you think
you're doing?!
KEVIN
Going back to the dorm. That was our last hope,
we need to just accept that this afternoon will
be a disaster and there's no changing it.
PAT
You can't give up now! We might be on the cusp
of greatness. The cusp you hear me??
KEVIN
I'm not, Pat.
PAT
You turn your back on this moment Kevin and I
swear you will regret it for the rest of your
life. On this side of the fence we are stuck
with the same problems as yesterday but over
there...that's where the answers lie.
KEVIN

PAT

A beat as Kevin considers what to
do.
KEVIN
Fine.
PAT
Yesss! Now, first thing's first, you'll need
your radiogram to investigate the new and
unusual atmospheres you're likely to encounter.
And you'll need something to protect you from a
potential magnetic field when approaching the
fence.
KEVIN
Woah Pat, this is too much. I can't carry all
of this with me, I need to try and fit in or at
the very least, go unnoticed.
PAT
Not to worry, I have packed you a pair of
glasses and a hat - replete with wig which
should take care of your disguise...
KEVIN
No, you're not listening to me Pat. Radiograms,
hats, wigs...I can't have any of this. I just
need to get over there and observe the boy -
without being seen. Whatever 'he' is, he has
what I need. The confidence - charisma. Learn

(Beat)

PAT
